Nu Mu

Alpha Kappa Alpha

 

             On June 2, 1980 on the Queens College Campus of the City University of New York, The Nu Mu Chapter was chartered by the 24th North Atlantic Regional Director Nellie Gaylord and under the sponsorship of Epsilon Pi Omega and their President Gloria Black. The chapter would be comprised of three colleges in the Queens County: Queens College, St. John's University, and York College.

 

            The chartering line, Basea Ku Afrea (Sisterhood Everlasting), consisted of 14 young ladies: Normine Allen, Gloria Benford, Miriam Burnett, Laura Collins, Judith Denbrow, Susie Faulkner, Carolee Foreman, Maria Foreman, Edith Gonsalves, Camilla Holmes, Lauraine Hurse, Barbara Johnson, Gloria Moore, and Christine Tucker.

 

            In the years of its chartering, Nu Mu has followed in tradition of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority by participating in programs and service projects such as the United Negro College Fund, Emerging Young Leaders Program, March of Dimes Annual Walk-a-thon, Camp Smile, Sickle-Cell Anemia Foundation, Voter Education and Registration, HIV and AIDS Awareness, National Council of Negro Women, NAACP, American Cancer Society-Making Strides for Breast Cancer, Harlem Dowling, Afrikan Poetry Theatre, Annual Thanksgiving Clothing and Food Distribution, New York Cares, Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts, Bread for Life, American Cancer Society-Relay For Life, Midnight Run, Publicolor Day, among a host of others. Through numerous fundraising projects, bake sales, talent and fashion shows, and raffles, Nu Mu has raised thousands of dollars, which have been donated to charities and scholarships.

 

            Nu Mu has been recognized for their hard work and dedication to their chapter and its program by winning awards at North Atlantic Regional Conferences, St. John's University Office of Greek Life (Highest GPA), Miss AKA, placement as Alpha Kappa Alpha Leadership Fellows; as well as EAF scholarships. The accomplishments of The Nu Mu Chapter continue after graduation with numerous members of her alumnae pursuing careers as doctors, lawyers, accountants, businesswomen, clergy, consults, educators and much more. Additionally, Nu Mu alumnae remain active within the sorority and continue to be of service to their community.
